Back in Training

Hello Everybody,

New year started 1000 miles per hour,  Im back in training full force, therapy, conditioning, boxing , wrestling a lots of Jiu-Jitsu. I started my training camp at The Arena MMA . The training is going very smooth, we have great greco roman and wrestlers, like George and Steve Abas (silver medalist Olimpics), boxing with Richard (9-0 pro boxing). The atmosphere is great and Im looking forward to a great MMA year with no injuries and lots of training, I stucked in my blue belt in MMA now is time for get the purple.

And adding to this, some news, I have decided to drop to 185 pound division. I walk around 205 and don’t lose any weight to fight and I think Im a small 205, so at 185 I ll be stronger and faster. Im looking forward to fight in March’s Sengoku .

Besides MMA, I just finished to shoot the instructional part of my new DVD for Jiu-Jitsu, That will be the only instructional I will put on the market, that will complement Saulo’s Revolution Series, so you will have the best of us both. The DVD has 8 segments. Submission, Defense, Takedowns, Passing, Guard, Side Control, Mount, Back. In bonus feature a nice interview about me, the DVD and History of Jiu-Jitsu and Flexibility and Agility focused in Jiu-Jitsu Moves.

I really hope that will help improve all jiu-jitsu fighters .

The year started really busy and I ll be back here giving you the news.

Wishing everyone a great week.

Seminars. Toronto, Canada and Toledo, OHIO

This past month was great, my little girl is growing strong and Diego is ready to go. And as usual I had a nice field trip on my Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu affiliated schools. First one was at Toronto BJJ that Jorge Britto is the Sensei. I had the chance to be there at the same time that Mauricio Shogun was there. On friday Nov 20th we had the Evolucao Thai Graduation, and myself got my Dark Blue belt in Muay Thai from my teachers Mauricio and Andre Amado. The next day I had my Gi and No-Gi seminars, was a huge success as always and Shogun participated too and I had the chance to fix some gaps on his game and after my injury at the ADCCs I finally trained, trained for about 15 min and was great to exchange that energy with a great champ like Mauricio. And on day after my seminar we had his seminar, and he got to fix some of my issues too. In the end was great, I hope we can train sometime soon.

After that great weekend, Im heading down to Toledo. My great friend Chris Blanke picked me up in Toronto wich is 5 hours form Toledo, but…….we miss the track and we ended up in Buffalo, NY…so in the end 5 hours became 8…. but I was fine. And the one week in Toledo was terrific, who doesn’t know I first moved to Toledo, OH in 2002. During the week I taught privates and semi-privates and I had a great Thanksgiving dinner in my old house.

The seminar was very special. We promoted one more member for the Black Belt, well deserved for Jeremy Harris from Lima, OH. And for me is more than a blessing, because I get to see how much all my boys evolved, and some of my first students were there too. I taught them how to roll and now they are brown and black belts, this for me is the biggest achieve a martial artist can have, built and evolve human beings.

Hope everybody is doing well, and next post….  UFC LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. Penn vs Sanchez.

MMA Rules

Today I want to talk about rules…. we have seen the last 2 UFCs very controversial decisions. Lyoto x Shogun, Randy x Vera. So what is more important for these guys now… Cage control, efficiency, damage, quantity and quality of hits… or in the end each person see the fight different.

EX. Lyoto x Shogun,  Rua clearly made more damage, hit more, and Machida good counters, and in the end you really have to beat the Champ to become the Champ??  is that will be a rule then…we never know… the only thing I can see ab out that fight is that both of the respected the other so much.. and that we still can’t figure out Machida’s game, but in the end I wanted to see more blood in the eyes from Shogun, you need to take that belt away do not leave in the referees hands, because some of them don’t know anything about grappling, some are boxers, some kung fu, so each eye is an eye. A lesson there. the challenger have to bring it and take it otherwise seems that he don;t want it.

Couture x Vera… boring fight but the only thing that really happened in the fight was the knockdown in the 2nd and that Vera took him down, mounted him but no effective….. so what is the criteria, it’s impossible to figure it out, and I hope if one day I step in there , I’m ready to not leave at the judges hands.

I want to see more people hitting like Fedor, every punch is to take the head of the opponent, they are boxing with little gloves.

In the end, MMA is evolving, fans more educated and fighters more and more athletes..just wish more Martial Artists then just tough guys.   :)

Hope you guys have a great wek

Best Day of My Life

Last night was the best moment of my life. After so many glories and experiences and I thought I’ve seen everything, but something yesterday made me see how blessed we are and how small our lives are and there is more in life than just glories and gold.  And the 7 pounds and 20 inches beauty… a little me called VICTORIA made me see life with other eyes. I’m feeling stronger than ever and at every moment that she grows and laughs at me I feel so strong and powerful, makes us feel like we did the impossible.  My girl, she was awesome, she took it like a warrior and at 11:54pm on the night of October 20th 2009….she came, to rock my world. Now I will discover the truly meaning of love, meaning of to really die for someone. That tiny little person can change the world and I ll raise her, of course with a lot of love and a lot of Jiu-Jitsu, she will be gentle, she will be art, she will be strong and she will follow all the creed of a good human being.

I tell you guys, that is the best victory I ever had in my life. Now I fight for her, to make her proud. And If I lose, she will understand that I did my best, because I know, love…. Always win.

Now I leave you guys with the face of a new man.

Ribeiro Annual Tournament and Relson Gracie

Hello guys,

This has been an awesome week and don’t know where to start.

OK, first my baby is still in the womb, we are past due , so anytime now….I’m so stoked can’t wait to teach her how to choke and apply an arm-lock  :)

While she doesn’t come I ll talk about my other kids…the ones that are grown and I teach them how to fight. Past weekend we had the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Annual Tournament and was held on San Diego, CA . We had over 120 competitors and I was so proud to see that, because I could see how wonderful job my instructors all over America are doing. They fought like champs, left their heart out there and even with almost zero experience and some with one week of training they did a great job just for trying it. And for me is a blessing, because I helped the to be like that. I directly or thru their teacher put Jiu-Jitsu in the, and now it belongs to them.  They are My Jiu-Jitsu and I’m proud of the family I have. Im honored to have all of them representing my Jiu-Jitsu.  The tournament went perfect,  a lot of exciting fights and I can see a lot of future champs.

We had several states there and 4 countries. USA, Brazil, Canada and Mexico. Plus states of California, Oklahoma, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ontario(Canada).

It’s great to see how Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Association grow in these years since i first moved to US in 2002.

The energy was so great that we had a great surprise on the next Monday. We had a Relson Gracie seminar at our University, Relson is the 2nd son of Helio Gracie, one of the toughest, stronger and funniest in the Family, went undefeated all his competition years back in Brazil, winning always weight and absolute, he was also the first to make the connection between surf and Jiu-Jitsu, he lives and teach in Honolulu, HI , please visit www.relsongracie.com . And I say that was way special because Relson was the first to gave us the opportunity to come to America and teach. He brought my brother Saulo and then I came with Saulo to teach seminars too, and from that we spread our seeds and followed our path. We are very thanked to Relson for making this possible for us.

Thank you guys for being here with me and soon I will bring more news.

ADCC 2009 Experience

This year’s ADCC was vey special,  first off was a great training camp, I came from a knee injury, and did a lot f strength with Steve Maxwell to build the base and when the training started, the time off mat made me feel like a turtle, but with time I got it all back and by the time Lovato Jr , Kron, Rader got to camp we were all in good form, along was Rani, Saulo and Penny and all the boys. 3 weeks prior to the competition a lot of Ginastica Natural with Prof. Alvaro Romano, put me flexible and agile, and in the end, great conditioning, flexibility and injury free.

The trip was easy, 14 hour flight, a lot of talking with my brother and a few Lost series later , here we are in Barcelona.  Like always everybody is in shape and ready to go and the energy in the hotel is awesome, this year the camaraderie was in the air, opponents were chilling together talking about life. After the weight in things change and the focus take place and it’s normal everybody put a shield around and not so many laughs, normal,   war is coming and everybody wants  to win.

In my case I was confident, I knew I was there to do 8 fights, the year before I won my division and lost first round in the Absolute, so for me better than that was winning both, all know Im an Absolute hunter and I was up to the challenge.

So the strategy was. Be conservative in the division and try to win it without wasting much energy, strategy that now I think was great, but watching my fights I really bit my tongue, I held back and fought to win what made it a little ugly and I apologise for that, but in the end is ADCC and is war and we need to use all our weapons, and in the end ADCC Champion…again that felt great, but that was just the first battle and the war wasn’t over.. But after the division looked like I took 100lbs out of my back, I felt great and the responsability was off, what made a lot of diference, I fought the open so relaxed and I get to fight much better, no strategy, just Jiu-Jitsu. And after all I was in the finals against Braulio that was in a great day too, but I’ve fought him before and I knew what was coming.

20 min, 10 no points 10 w points, so my strategy was feel the fight for couple minutes and go for the kill and spend all the energy I had saved, I was ready to go intense 20 minutes. Fight start feel stronger than him, he let me take him down, but he surprised me and locked the inverted triangle, was strong but no even close to make me tap, so I stand up and let him give up on the position , so we go to the ground and I think, “Ok is time to kill, he can’t keep u with me” and 30 sec later , I didn’t keep up with myself, I was trying to hold him, he pushed me, I held and …… was over. Felt the muscle of my chest/biceps stretching and that was it.

Sometimes we ask ourselves why this things happen, and I always try to see for the best way. I won my division, 2nd in the absolute, good enough, maybe for me not enough, but I have to thank God everyday for the gift he gave me, I can’t judge him or blame something for what happen, I still think Im the best that I can be, but that day was Braulio’s day, somewhere in the course e deserved more than me i that day, and It’s y job to keep my head high and work even harder and come back stronger than never. Next ADCC will be war…Roger, Galvao and cia, but you know what…I’m happy that i this point of my life I still can find motivation to move forward, and you know guys, Ive been hurt/injury so much…but I won’t quit, my mission on earth is to be the best that I can possibly be, and to achieve that I need to do it again……  so be it.

Thank all you guy for the support. You are my motivation to wake up everyday and do my best, and I hope I can inspire you guys to be the best that you can be too.

Now for me,  heal and be ready for the biggest challenge of my life.  Be a Father. My baby Victoria is coming soon and that will be my challenge, and she will be on earth to see her daddy to be the best that he can be.

Hope you all have a great day.
